Clinton Global Initiative 2011

Professor Julia H?usermann MBE, Founder and President of Rights and Humanity joined President Clinton, actor Sean Penn and a global group of experts at the fourth annual Clinton Global Initiative University meeting. The meeting brought together students and national youth organisations to create and implement Commitments to Action across five Focus Areas: Education, Environment & Climate Change, Peace & Human Rights, Poverty Alleviation, and Public Health.

The meeting was held from April 1-3, 2011 at the University of California, San Diego. The Clinton Global Initiative University encourages young people from all over the world to make a significant impact by confronting some of the world’s most urgent challenges.

During the event, Professor H?usermann moderated the Peace and Human Rights working session – ‘Scarcity and Crisis: Food, Water and Energy as a Right and a Conflict Driver’ - encouraging a community of young leaders to take concrete steps in solving the world’s challenges. Professor H?usermann was joined by Nnimmo Bassey, Chair of Friends of the Earth International, Joshua Newton, Student and Consultant, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University and Jamie Statter, Commitments Senior Associate, Environment & Energy, Clinton Global Initiative.                         

This session examined how resource scarcity drives political instability and violence. Panellists were asked to highlight promising opportunities for action and existing effective strategies for addressing the food, water, and energy crises.
