Payroll Giving is a simple and flexible scheme in the UK, which allows employees to give to Rights and Humanity straight from their monthly pay packet on a tax-free basis.
It means that you can support us every month, giving as much as you wish. You can also increase or decrease the amount or stop if you wish to at any time. The full donations are taken from your gross salary, reducing the amount of income tax that is deducted from your salary. From a charity’s perspective, you can provide us with a regular, reliable income stream that allows us to plan ahead and budget for the future.
Why the gift is worth more
Payroll giving is cheaper because its tax free - for example, if you are basic rate tax payer a donation to us of £5 per month would only make a £3.90 difference to your pay packet (the taxman pays the rest!). The donation is worth more because you give to us before your gross salary is taxed.
What you need to do
Simply ask your payroll department to deduct regular charitable donations to The UK Association of Rights and Humanity from your salary by filling out a simple application form, stating how much you would like to give. Your donations will show on your payslip. The UK Association of Rights and Humanity is a UK registered charity 1001555.
If your employer does not have a Payroll Giving Scheme
If your employer does not already have a scheme in place, don’t worry – it’s quick and easy to set up. Talk to your payroll department about setting up a scheme to give through salaries. Employers simply sign a contract with a Payroll Giving Agency who will transmit donations on their behalf.
Payroll Giving raises almost £89 million for UK charities each year.Business benefits of the scheme
Payroll Giving is a great way for you to demonstrate commitment to the good causes that your employees care about. Payroll giving:
- is quick and easy to set-up and administer
- can aid retention and recruitment of staff
- boosts your company’s social responsibility profile
- enables you to generate a vital income stream to support Rights and Humanity.
All that your employees need to do is fill out one simple application form, stating how much they would like to give and naming Rights and Humanity as their chosen charity. The system is easy to opt into and out of, giving donors full control over their giving.
The Payroll Giving Quality Mark recognises and rewards organisations for making Payroll Giving available to their staff. The Quality Mark comprises a certificate and logo, as well as Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.
How employers can set up a scheme
To set Payroll Giving, all you have to do is sign up with a Government approved Payroll Giving Agency such as the Charities Trust or Charities Aids Foundation who will transmit the donations on your behalf – it’s as easy as that. All modern payroll systems can facilitate Payroll Giving. Your payroll staff will deduct the amount, as per any other pre-tax deduction (after National Insurance, but before tax) and forward it on to your Payroll Giving Agency, who will distribute the monies to Rights and Humanity.
If you are an employee or employer and would like more information or advise please contact Rights and Humanity’s office and we will be happy to help.
